Braces Today

Braces Strathfield

Many of us wear dental braces as teenagers. This is because most people do not have naturally straight teeth or ideally aligned jaws. Often braces can correct this. And if we have braces as teenagers we benefit from naturally straight teeth for the rest of our life.

Braces can move individual teeth horizontally, and vertically to some degree. The horizontal movement of the teeth is more common, closing gaps and spacing the teeth evenly. Occasionally vertical movement of a tooth might be needed, perhaps if the eye teeth are too high.

Braces can also correct moderate jaw alignment problems. It is important to correct these jaw issues as early as possible to prevent possible complications later on. Otherwise, misaligned jaws as a teenager could lead to more serious jaw pain as an adult.

Braces can be fitted once all the permanent teeth (except the wisdom teeth) have completely emerged. These permanent teeth are usually in place once a person is in their mid-teens. It is possible to have braces at a later age (some adults have them), but the earlier we have braced the sooner we benefit from straight teeth. Braces worn during our teens give us neat straight teeth during all our adult years.

The two traditional problems of braces are their appearance and inconvenience. It is obvious when people wear braces, and awkward for the person who wears them; speaking and eating are initially difficult until the individual gets used to the braces.

More modern braces, such as clear and ceramic, are less obtrusive than older traditional braces. They blend in with the colour of the teeth to some degree and are at least a little more comfortable. The discomfort of braces is temporary, and should not dissuade us from benefits that last for many years to come.
