It has always been accepted as good advice to eat a healthy diet. But the foods considered healthy seem to change over time. Fats and chocolate were thought to be unhealthy less than a generation ago, something to be eaten only in moderation. Now many fats or at least more natural fats, are understood to be essential. And dark chocolate is considered very beneficial as long as there is not too much sugar. Modern ideas on nutrition strongly suggest a very attractive assortment of foods is actually good for us.
- Avocado – This seems to come up in a lot of diet recommendations. It is a good example of healthy fat, and there are several vitamins in there too with a fair dose of fibre. As far as teeth go avocados are good for the healthy probiotic bacteria that keep our mouths clean. This also helps digestion and keeps our breath fresh.
- Kefir and Yogurt – These are fermented milk-based drinks. The diverse probiotic bacteria in these foods keep our gut healthy and greatly benefit our teeth and gums. This is also great for immunity and fresh breath.
- Kimchi and Sauerkraut – A great source of probiotic bacteria from fermented vegetables. These also seem to get rid of bad bacteria, including the type that attaches to teeth.
- Spinach – People have recognized the vitamins and mineral value of spinach for many years. And of course, these are great for dental health. The antioxidant values of spinach are a more recent discovery. This keeps body cells healthy and repairs cell damage. Try adding a block of spinach to a morning smoothie.
- Asparagus – This is known to contain a lot of good vitamin B. But it also contains prebiotic fibre that you need to gain the benefits of probiotics.
- Butter – Butter was demonized for many years, and diet experts recommended margarine instead. But this turns out to be a big mistake. The fats in butter turned out to be far more healthy and helped us to feel satisfied after eating. Butter seems to be good for oral health.
- Liver – Our grandparent generation believed the liver to be healthy, and even though they were right it has fallen out of favour. The liver is a great source of vitamins, including Vitamin K. We only need to eat a small amount to help benefit our teeth and gums.
- Cashews – Nuts are always quite healthy, even if they have a lot of calories. But cashews were recently found to have an extra advantage – there is something in cashews that kills off the most common form of tooth decaying bacteria. Eat a few cashews after a meal and you greatly reduce the problems of tooth decay.
- Garlic – We associate this with bad breath, but it’s great for our immune system and really helps increase the good bacteria while helping get rid of the bad bacteria that causes tooth decay. Apparently cutting the garlic and leaving it for half an hour before eating will increase it effectiveness.
- Parsley – Fermented food and garlic will give us bad breath. We can remedy this with parsley, which freshens breath while adding lots of vitamins and acting as an anti-bacterial agent. Best of all, we only need a small amount. Chew a little for fresh breath.
- Green Tea – Also great for fresh breath, and reducing plaque. This appears to have no end of health benefits. 3 or 4 cups of green tea a day seem optimal, and you can use decaf if you wish. Cold green tea is just as effective, so you can use this like drinking water. Brew green tea at 80 degrees to remove the bitter taste. The L-Theanine in green tea is noted for its ability to bring about calm mental alertness.
