Braces And Parramatta Orthodontics

Orthodontics is the specialised branch of dentistry that corrects alignment problems in teeth and jaws. Ideally, our teeth should be straight, with the upper and lower teeth neatly fitting together when our jaws close. If the teeth and jaws are not ideal, then we might suffer joint pain, find oral cleaning to be difficult, or just feel our teeth don’t quite look right.

A person may seek the services of an orthodontist for health and cosmetic reasons. Dental irregularities may compromise a person’s ability to chew and speak. They may cause ongoing wear on the jaws, leading to discomfort or pain. In might even make breathing difficult, especially whilst sleeping. Quite often, however, people who consult the orthodontist just prefer their teeth to look neat, tidy and more attractive.

Do you have the following?

  • Crooked Teeth
  • Teeth misalignment
  • Jaw Problems (TMJ)
  • Malocclusion
  • Speech Issues
  • Unexplained Headaches

Then you will almost certainly benefit from orthodontic treatment.

Explaining Braces Parramatta

Dental braces are the classic, tried and true method of aligning teeth. They are the most common orthodontic treatment, having been proved effective for several generations. Everything from minor issues to most serious alignment problems can be solved with traditional braces.

Braces are often fitted during our teens. They cannot be used before this as our jaws and teeth are still developing. We can only use braces when all of the permanent adult teeth (except the wisdom teeth) have fully emerged. However, it is always possible to use braces at a latter date. Today there are many adults who benefit from braces. But by having the braces fitted as early as possible we enjoy the benefits for longer.

The most common type of dental braces are made of metal. There are metal brackets on each tooth, joined by a curved wire. This combination of brackets and wire put constant pressure on the teeth, moving them into a more ideal position. It usually takes about two years for the teeth to reach their final position, though more severe alignment issues may take longer. After the braces have achieved their work they will be removed, and a retainer will be used for a few years in order to maintain the teeth’s new position.

There are some modern variations on traditional braces. These include ceramic braces that partially blend with the tooth colour. And lingual braces that are fitted behind the teeth, where they are virtually unnoticeable. Usually, the braces are fitted to both the upper and lower teeth, but occasionally they are only used on one or the other.

The process of wearing braces involves periodic adjustments by an orthodontist to ensure the teeth are moving as planned. Expect to have an orthodontic appointment every two months.
